Leaders who want to create high-performance teams need to understand and consistently implement work delegation and accountability. Delineating the work that you must do and assignable work to your team: volunteers, staff, or consultants helps you focus on your role as the leader and strategic thinker. Delegation provides a valuable balance of the workload and fosters a greater sense of buy-in and support of the mission and vision. Accountability is equally important. However, leaders must operate understanding that when you first delegate work, the staff may experience challenges and outright failure, these are learning opportunities and teachable moments. Taking the time to develop and reinforce the correct process is time consuming initially. If executed properly the time investment will provide a high rate of return in the form of future efficiencies.
